Transcript: Well, we left Saint-Martin-Vésubie and marched for about 2 days and got everybody over the border. It was high mountains and difficult but on the other side, I was met by a Italian lieutenant and I told him there were 700 Jews here that had to be taken care of -- food and maybe sleeping arrangements -- and he said, "No problem." Now, I went in the office with that lieutenant and he made a phone call to his headquarters in Cuneo and the man on the other side said, "What, what's your problem?" "And is the problem is I have 700 abray Jews that are running away from the Germans and what am I supposed to do?" Well, he says, "Hold on." They put him on hold and the next voice that came was very Germanic and he says, "Hold them there and we'll take care of your problem." Well, I knew who that was. It wasn't the Americans waiting for the Jews to say hello. It was Nazis.
