Vitka Kempner - The Avengers attack Vilna
Transcript: Our purpose was to fight against the Germans and to hit at them in Vilna in order to show that the partisans can reach them even in the city. And that was the most important goal in that operation, to shake the assurance of the Germans.
The goal was to blow up electricity transformers in the middle of the city, and to interrupt the flow of water, to blow up water supply. We entered Kaivis, and in the night we were supposed to carry out the operation actually in the evening. Sonja, who was our connection office, helped us by introducing me to a Lithuanian policeman. I acted as if I went for a walk with him, and we walked through the busiest streets of the city, (name of streets) and I was supposed to take a magnetic bomb, to add a detonator, and to attach it to the door of the transformer. I put down three of these bombs, Hayale one, and the boys succeeded in blowing up the water pipes. After a few hours we heard explosions and the city fell into darkness. There was great joy, and it had an impact on the Germans, who understood, that the partisans had reached all the way into Vilna. They didn't know, that a few Jewish boys and girls did that.
